Starting with the basics: balance bikes
The question I'm asked most often is: "Geoffrey, when should they start?". My answer? As early as possible!
Balance bikes are generally suitable for ages two to four. These are pedal-less bikes, and they are the best-kept secret for parents who want to skip the training wheels stage in the future.
-
Why is it good? The child learns to control their balance naturally.
-
How does it work? They simply push with their feet and when they gain speed – they lift them up and feel the wind!
-
Seat height: When the child is sitting, their fingertips should touch the ground.
-
Distance from handlebars: The child should comfortably reach the handlebars without stretching too much.
-
Weight: Look for bikes made of lightweight materials (like aluminum) to make it easy for them to turn the pedals.
-
Standard mark: Make sure the helmet is approved and safe.
-
Perfect fit: The helmet should sit straight on the forehead (not tilted back) and be stable.
-
Style: Let the kids choose a helmet with characters they love. If they love the helmet, they won't want to take it off!
Diving In: Bikes for Kids Ages 4 and Up
We've reached the age where they can start pedaling! At age 4, children are ready for "big kid" bikes. In this age range, we usually talk about 12 or 14-inch bikes.
Geoffrey's Tip: Don't buy bikes that are too big "to grow into". Bikes that are too big are heavy and difficult to control, which can discourage the child from riding. The goal is for the child to feel safe!

I may be a giraffe with a long neck, but even I know that the head is the most important organ! Never ride without a helmet, period.
